Unlocking the Wonders of Dung Beetles: A Day with the Nature Classroom

A group of enthusiastic participants from Nature Classroom, an educational non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Penang, Malaysia, recently embarked on a journey into the intriguing world of dung beetles. Hosted by Dr. Li Yuen from the Tropical Ecology and Entomology lab (TEE Lab) at Nanyang Technological University and the South East Asia Rainforest Research Partnership (SEARRP), the group visited the Institute of Tropical Biology and Conservation (ITBC), UMS, Sabah.

Dr. Li Yuen, shared her knowledge about the fascinating world of dung beetles. She emphasized the significance of dung beetles as bioindicators, capable of conveying vital information about the health of the surrounding forest. She also showed the group her dung beetle specimens, carefully stored, and curated in the ITBC's Borneensis collection. The group from the Nature Classroom was impressed with these tiny beetles and their essential roles in ecosystem. For many, it was their first encounter with these remarkable beetles. Discussions during the visit revolved around the potential for future collaborations and outreach programs, particularly aimed at bringing children from Penang & Sabah closer to nature. The prospect of creating a dung beetle picture book for children's education emerged as an exciting initiative. We are looking forward to future collaborations.
