From the 14th – 17th November 2023 TEELab’s Dr. Eleanor Slade and Dr. Chiew Li Yuen were invited to contribute to a workshop at the Danum Valley Studies Centre focussed on the establishment of a visionary research framework for the Danum Valley Conservation Area (DVCA) and organised by Yayasan Sabah, Malaysia.
Datuk Prof. Dr. Ghazally Ismail gave an opening plenary “Packing a Punch 4 Decades On” where he offered insights into the journey of conservation efforts in Danum over the past four decades, acknowledging milestones and addressing the contemporary challenges faced. The participants engaged in in-depth discussions, breaking into groups to delve into key themes essential for the future research framework: (1) Rainforest ecology, regeneration, conservation and reforestation; (2) Economics and policies in rainforest management; (3) Documentation, assessment & repository of rainforest diversity; (4) Loss of biodiversity and climate change; (5) Issues of sustainable ecotourism. These breakout sessions fostered discussions on innovative solutions that transcend conventional approaches, particularly in addressing environmental issues.
This workshop provided collaborative efforts in shaping the future of research within the DVCA, reflecting a commitment to advancing conservation practices and addressing the multifaceted challenges faced in preserving our invaluable rainforest ecosystems and we are happy that we could be part of it!
