Kembara Rimba Taliwas Programme – Engaging Schools through Environmental Education Modules

Updated: Apr 6, 2023

The Kembara Rimba Taliwas programme is led by the Southeast Asia Rainforest Research Partnership (SEARRP) in collaboration with the Sabah Foundation – Conservation and Environmental Management Division and Swansea University (UK) School of Science Scheme (S4). The Programme aims to mentor a new generation of environmental champions through a series of interactive and fun, science-based environmental education modules and capacity building programmes in one of Borneo’s last remaining lowland rainforests – Taliwas River Conservation Area.

On 15 and 17 February 2023, TEE Lab's Dr Chiew Li Yuen had a wonderful time of sharing with secondary school students in Sabah, where she raised awareness of the importance of riparian buffers and managing them. She shared on what defines an ideal riparian buffer and provided case studies of riparian buffers in Sabah’s oil palm plantations. A total of 80 students from eight secondary schools were enrolled in this programme, namely:

1. SMK Bt Garam

2. SMK Bt Garam II

3. SMK Paris Kinabatangan

4. SMK Agaseh

5. SMK Sukau

6. SMK Kinabutan

7. SMK Sepagaya

8. SMK Visi The sharing ended with a series of quizzes to determine the students' understanding of riparian buffers. It was a pleasure to have the students with us for the session. Check out these photos to see what took place!
