Checking out the nature ways

Updated: Oct 21

Singapore has Nature Ways that are "routes planted with specific trees and shrubs to facilitate the movement of animals between two green spaces." So, how effective are these Nature Ways in supporting the biodiversity of insect pollinators?

Netting!

To answer this, one of our undergraduates, Alexis, is surveying these routes and recording the insect pollinator species and documenting plant-pollinator interactions. She will then investigate how the biodiversity of insect pollinators and plant-pollinator interactions are affected by various characteristics of the Nature Ways (e.g. connectivity, level of urbanisation, etc).

In July, we were out surveying along Mandai Nature Way, and recorded about 30 butterfly and bee species. Alexis also had a go with netting unidentifiable species to take a closer look at them. We are so excited to see the outcome of this project, which could help contribute in the planning and maintenance of Singapore's Nature Ways.

TEE Lab in the field! :D
