A Delightful Visit From Dr. Nobby Yamaguchi & Ms. Athirah

In mid-October 2024, we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Nobby Yamaguchi, Associate Professor at University Malaysia Terengganu, and his master’s student, Ms. Athirah, at the TEE Lab. Nobby has dedicated much of his career to studying the evolution and conservation of cats. His research mainly focuses on the morphological analysis of skulls and collecting samples for ancient biomolecular research. Over the past 25 years, Nobby has participated in various projects across the Old World—from the southern tip of Africa through Central Asia to the Russian Far East and Europe, visiting numerous natural history collections along the way.

During their visit, Ms. Athirah delivered an insightful presentation on her master’s project titled “Craniological Differentiation Amongst Small Felids in Southeast Asia: Implications on Their Niche Partitioning.” Her work delves into the structural differences in the skulls of small felids in the region, and the associations with their ecological roles and behaviors. The TEE Lab members—Ong Xin Rui, Calvin Leung, Nicole Dorville, Zann Teo, and Chiew Li Yuen—also had the opportunity to present their ongoing projects. During these presentations, we had a lively exchange of ideas and scientific discussions.

To end the day, we enjoyed a dinner together at a Malay halal food court at Jurong Point, where we introduced our guests to some of Singapore’s culinary delights. A big thank you to Nobby and Athirah for visiting us, and we look forward to your next visit to the TEE Lab!
