A Day In The Life of A Insect Ecologist

Updated: Jul 12, 2023

In November 2022, Dr Eleanor Slade and Dr Chiew Li Yuen, both ecologists and entomologists from the Tropical Ecology & Entomology Lab (TEE Lab), participated in a 1-week scientific expedition in the Sekar Imej Conservation Area managed by Wilmar Estates in Sabah, Malaysia. The expedition consisted of researchers from the South East Asian Rainforest Research Partnership (SEARRP) and local Malaysian Universities, and aimed to collect baseline data on the flora and fauna of the area, and to provide training to local communities and estate staff in biodiversity monitoring.

In this article, follow Dr Slade and Dr Chiew as they describe a day in the life of an insect ecologist and find out how they sampled insects such as dung beetles, butterflies, moths and dragonflies.
