You Yuan

Hi! I’m You Yuan, a PhD student at the Asian School of the Environment. My research focuses on oil palm smallholders and sustainable land management in Malaysia, particularly how differences among farmers, their management practices, and their connections to markets and support networks shape sustainability outcomes.

I grew up in Johor, Malaysia, and studied agricultural science in Taiwan and Japan. Before starting my PhD, I also worked as an agronomist and plantation executive in Malaysia. These experiences sparked my interest in understanding agriculture not only as an ecological system, but also through the people, decisions, and practical realities behind how farms are managed.

My broader interests include sustainable agriculture, tropical land-use systems, and finding practical ways to connect scientific research with farmers and other stakeholders on the ground. Outside research, I enjoy photography, travelling, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, visiting farms and talking to farmers.

My favourite tea is Wenshan Baozhong (pouchong) from Taiwan, the floral aroma and sweetness always make me want another cup.
